The day following the President’s recent address from the Oval Office, Louisville’s Courier Journal posted the following letter under the title, “Address guns as public health problem.“
Remember when cigarette smoking was acceptable even though huge amounts of medical evidence showed it to be really harmful to health and costly? We resisted changing and the tobacco companies refused to admit just how addictive and deadly smoking was to health.
What I see now is we are in denial about what a serious threat to public health and life itself are easy access to guns. They are killing us and reducing our quality of life!
We are dying in ever greater numbers by violence with guns. We must address this as a national health problem.
Clinging to false arguments put forth by the NRA and gun manufacturers will only make matters worse. There are so many options available to reduce and prevent more violence with guns. It’s way past time to start trying to quit our addiction to guns. We could start by stopping the promotion and advertising of guns.

One has to wonder if the Courier Journal is more interested in pushing an agenda rather than doing some basic fact checking before publishing a letter in the paper. The letter writer mentions “false arguments,” but then says “[we’re] dying in ever greater numbers by violence with guns. We must address this as a national health problem.”
No other than the Washington Post points out what the true “false argument” truly is:
“We’ve had a massive decline in gun violence in the United States. Here’s why.”
